Say Goodbye To Shampoo: Information, Tips & Tricks About Hair Soaps

Less plastic packaging, fewer chemical additives: More and more people are now using hair soaps instead of shampoos to clean their hair. Important information, tips and tricks about hair soaps can be found here.

Soap has been used to cleanse the body for thousands of years and is mainly used to wash the skin. But while hair used to be cleaned with unique soaps, this has long gone out of fashion.

Thanks to the zero-waste movement, however, this is changing again – and so there is an ever-growing selection of soaps for hair.

Hair Soap: The Fat Content Is Crucial

Compared to classic soaps, the hair soaps contain a significantly lower fat content (from three to nine percent) so that the hair does not feel or look greasy after washing.

Whether a soap suits your hair also depends on this fat content.

The rule of thumb here is that greasy hair needs a little excess fat; dry hair tends to require more excess fat – the higher the excess fat, the more nourishing the soap.

If the hair is too dry after washing with a hair soap, you should use a soap with a higher degree of excess fat.

Another difference between hair soaps and classic soaps is their composition of oils and fats. Castor oil, for example, creates a lot of foam and makes the hair shine.

Almond oil, avocado oil, hemp oil and grapeseed oil care for the hair and provide moisture. Mango butter, shea and cocoa butter have also proven their worth due to their favorable care properties.

Haircare: These Are The Advantages Of Hair Soaps

Hair soaps have many advantages compared to shampoos.

In addition to well-groomed, healthy and shiny hair, which the hair soap manufacturers promise, the hair soaps are free of synthetic ingredients such as preservatives, parabens, silicones and surfactants.

Therefore, they are healthier for skin and hair. Many hair soaps are also produced without palm oil and glycerin. Hair soaps are an extremely mild care product that can be used without hesitation for any hair type.

They also promote the natural environment of the scalp and ensure a pleasant feeling on the skin. Hair soaps are often very economical, so even a tiny piece lasts for many hair washes.

And last but not least, they have another decisive advantage that benefits the environment: hair soaps are sold without plastic packaging.

If they are packed in plastic foil, this is much smaller than classic plastic shampoo packaging.

After Washing Your Hair: Self-Made Conditioner Instead Of Conditioner

If you want to use a conditioner after washing your hair to make it easier to comb and give it a nice shine, you can also use an alternative to the classic hair conditioner in a plastic tube:

With a tablespoon of lemon juice or organic apple cider vinegar in a litre of cold water, you can easily make your acidic conditioner.

The hair does not even have to be washed out after rinsing, as the smell also disappears after drying.

After washing your hair, the soap must dry well to last longer. It is best to use a soap dish that allows the water to run off quickly.

Water Hardness Is Crucial

A so-called “acidic rinse” is recommended, especially in medium-hard water and therefore calcareous. The primary purpose of the conditioner is to wash the limescale out of the hair.

Soft water does not cause any problems; you can also do without a conditioner after washing your hair with a hair soap in certain regions. If the water is very hard, on the other hand, washing your hair with soap often becomes problematic.

The combination of the calcareous water and the soap forms lime soap, which leads to white flakes on the scalp and rough hair. However, it is usually possible to remedy this problem with a highly acidic conditioner.

But there are even soaps that already contain citric acid and apple cider vinegar, making a rinse unnecessary and preventing the limescale problem.
